Let’s be real – we’ve all had one. Heck, on a bad week we can have them multiple times a day! Just to clarify for those out there pretending they’re always on point, a creative block is the lack of ability to come up with ideas, inspiration and basically creativity. This occurs throughout all careers (not just graphic designers) and can be painful and down right depressing as you start to doubt your abilities.
So why does this happen?
Creative Block can occur for many reasons. Contributing factors include stress, outside distractions, poor health including lack of sufficient sleep (get your 8 hours people!) and lack of motivation. Deeper causes can also include a feeling of pressure to do a good job, fear of criticism and rejection and last but certainly not least, a break down in communication.
Never fear, your friendly creative team is here! There are many ways to help overcome this horrible beast and kick creative block to the curb. Well the first step is acknowledging the issue – highest of fives for doing so.
So now what? What is the solution or ways to prevent this from happening?
Here is a list of helpful ways to get you back in your zone:

STEP AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER! (Well after reading this blog post of course). Go for a walk, get outside, get amongst that nature or thriving metropolis. A little vitamin D and fresh air is great for the brain! Here in creative we like to visit the local vintage shop, visit design furniture stores or just head over to the park for lunch.
Brainstorm with colleagues or friends. Whether or not they’re in the same industry it’s always great to get a fresh perspective and a different point of view. There is no shame in asking for help – EVER!
Go somewhere new – either a new place or if you’re chained to your desk, check out new websites. Listen to podcasts or check out some awesome blogs. You never know where inspiration is lurking! For some cool websites go to:
Do harder tasks first thing in the morning and work your way to the easy stuff – We can personally vouch for this one, it works a treat!

Get a decent amount of sleep every night!
Exercise regularly – doctors and health fanatics rave about this one, apparently there are countless benefits.
Stress less – Try to separate your work life from your personal life. It’s hard, we know, but train your mind to do so. If you need to take a break from work to get back in the zone do so, it will be worth it in the long run.
Let criticism be a motivator – scared of what people will think or say? Do it anyway. Let people’s harsh words push you to achieve better results and prove them wrong.

Stay tuned for next week’s blog post! What is the topic you ask? Not sure…We need to go outside and get rid of our creative block!
